Catalyst R&D

Nathan Tars MEng, CEng

Nathan is a Chartered engineer and published materials specialist with a dynamic, first-principles approach to solving complex technical problems.

Nathan is a Chartered aerospace, mechanical and materials engineer with more than 20 years of international experience. A member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), he works with clients and the wider team to identify and articulate the qualifying R&D within their projects. Having solved complex engineering problems first-hand, he knows where genuine technological uncertainty sits, what it takes to resolve it, and how to present it clearly enough to withstand HMRC scrutiny.

His expertise spans advanced manufacturing, materials, special technology, machining, robotics and controls. A first-principles problem solver, he has developed several new technologies that major aero engine and surface engineering companies now use as standard practice, and has published research on surface engineering, thermal management and metallography. This breadth lets him assess qualifying work across the whole engineering chain, from materials behaviour and process design to robotics and controls. For clients, that means claims built on a clear technical narrative, grounded in a real understanding of the qualifying work.

He has worked across the UK, the US, Europe and Asia, consulting for blue-chip and Tier 1 companies on manufacturing engineering, operational excellence and technical leadership. He also holds SC clearance and has worked in the defence sector across several platforms.

Outside work, Nathan writes books on leadership and is a committed family man who loves sharing his passion for aviation with his son. A keen musician on guitar, drums and vocals, he plays in local bands and enjoys restoring and modifying cars.
